This week, NightLife rocks the beat with a celebration of gems and minerals, and an official Treasure Island Music Festival pre-party. In the east garden, don’t miss Shigeto, known in the beatmaker scene for his richly textured electronic music inspired by Motown, jazz, his Japanese ancestry, and everything in between. Groundislava opens with the dreamy-soundscape-meets-hip-hop beats that have earned him a spot in Shlohmo’s Wedidit crew. Visuals in the garden produced by Howard Wong of All of it Now. Get your gem on with the experts at the Gemological Institute of America, and see select specimens from the Academy’s collection on a rare trip into the gem and mineral vault. Jean DeMouthe, the Academy’s geology collection manager, will give a talk on the use of natural materials as tools, weapons, and of course, decorative objects. In the planetarium, discover the history of unheard music in the night skies at 6:30, followed by two showings of Earthquake, a show which travels through space and time to examine our planet’s history on a geologic timescale.
