The 2020-21 Bayview Science Institute application is now open! Apply by March 6, 2020.

BSI a transformative, one-year professional learning opportunity that deepens the science literacy of PreK-6 teachers and students, in order to empower all students to see themselves as independent thinkers and real world problem-solvers.

How can I teach science that matters to my students and their communities?

How can science inspire students to become more fluent readers, writers, and mathematicians?

How can I juggle the changing curriculum, the crunch for time, AND the needs of my students?

Join a community of Bayview-based educators to explore these questions, and more, starting in June 8-12, 2020.

Goals of the Institute

By focusing on teams of teachers and support staff from a few schools at a time, the Bayview Science Institute will encourage school-wide shifts, including:

  • Deepening teachers' content knowledge & interest in science
  • Preparing teachers to confidently facilitate the new, integrated Amplify science curriculum
  • Promoting student agency and independent thinking
  • Inspiring students to become caretakers of their environment

Program Components

  • 1 week program for educators at the California Academy of Sciences June 8 - 12, 2020
  • Follow-up coaching and after school PD sessions in 2020-21
  • Culminating 3-day summer session in June 2021

Opportunities for support beyond 1 year

BSI Alumni have the opportunity to continue being an active part of the learning community beyond the first year. Past participants have taken on personalized projects that furthered their own development as science educators, including:

  • Leading science professional development sessions at their schools
  • Integrating science curriculum with English Language Development goals
  • Building tinker kits for classrooms
  • Collaboratively planning with grade-level colleagues

Participants are invited to work on these projects at day-long Workday-Retreats at the Academy. Other support opportunities include 1-on-1 coaching and sub-releases to visit other BSI classrooms. Stipend amounts vary based on participation.
