Lured northward by increasingly warm ocean currents, sea turtles enjoy the bounty in Cape Cod Bay throughout the summer months. But, as temperatures drop, they are all too frequently stranded in what locals call the Cape’s “Deadly Bucket.” Learn how wildlife rehabilitators are giving it their all to help some of these endangered turtles find safe passage back to the Gulf of Mexico.

  • Four organizations, two hundred people, five vans, one plane, two states, one thousand miles, and one banana box— photo and video journalist Lauren Owens Lambert has witnessed firsthand (and documented!) the monumental conservation efforts aimed at saving sea turtles stranded in Cape Cod’s “Deadly Bucket”. Join Owens for a behind-the-scenes look into what it takes to save some of the world’s smallest, most endangered turtles, and hear her take on the human aspect of conservation, ocean health, natural resource management, climate change and our relationship with the natural world.
  • Once less common, mass casualty sea turtle strandings have increased in magnitude in recent years, threatening populations of endangered species like the Kemp’s Ridley turtle. Connie Merigo, Executive Director of the National Marine Life Center, will share what’s behind the spike in strandings, give an overview of the Kemp’s Ridley turtle’s life cycle, highlight the sea turtle triage and rehabilitation work underway at the National Marine Life Center and New England Aquarium, and share what it was like to carry out high-capacity emergency animal rescue work during the pandemic.

  • “Sea turtle pilot” isn’t a title held by many, but for Turtles Fly Too volunteer Ed Filangeri it’s a point of pride. Hear from Filangeri about how he first got involved with Turtles Fly Too, and learn just what lengths partner organizations and volunteers go to to organize turtle rescues and releases.
