Close your eyes and listen to music, nature, and the universe during an evening dedicated to surprising sounds—from the mind-bending theremin to the new songs birds are singing during the pandemic.

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS

  • The theremin is the only musical instrument in the world that is played without being touched. Virtuoso Carolina Eyck presents the history, concept, and technique of this unique instrument, which has been captivating generations of musicians with its eerie sound since its invention.

  • Have you been wondering how wildlife has responded to the COVID-19 shutdown? Join Dr. Jennifer Phillips as she discusses her recent work in San Francisco, where she recorded white-crowned sparrows that sang softer, sexier songs amidst a quieter 2020 soundscape.

  • Just because sound can't travel through space doesn't mean we can't listen to the cosmos. Astrophysicist and musician Dr. Matt Russo demonstrates how data sonification makes planetary orbits and iconic astronomical imagery audible to human ears.

All NightLife virtual programming is intended for audiences 21+.
